Photovoltaic solar power plant, an economic interest

Buy-out price

The main economic interest is the price at which EDF buys electricity from the producer. It was 0.3 €/kWh for stacked facilities and 0.55 €/kWh for integrated facilities on July 26th 2006.
The purchase contract is signed for a period of 20 years at a guaranteed price which is indexed to the cost of living.
Fossile energies are going to become rare, the cost of living is going to increase and the buy-out price of photovoltaic electricity will also go up.

Financial assistance

Private individuals

Private individuals can benefit from a tax credit of 50% + 200 € per dependent child, for a purchase of up to 16,000 €. This means a tax credit of 8,000 € for a childless couple, and 8,200 € for a couple with one child.

How can you obtain this tax credit?
  • it is automatically given for a power plant producing less than or equal to 3 kWp, i.e. 3,300 kWh per year.
  • it is given if the household's consumption of electricity is greater than half its production capacity, for example: in order to be able to install a 4.8 kWp photovoltaic power plant producing 5,500 kWh per year, you need to consume more than 2,750 kWh.

Assistance from local or regional councils can sometimes be added to this tax credit. It all depends on their policies.

Companies and authorities

As far as companies and authorised public authorities or institutions are concerned, assistance can be given on a case-by-case basis by the Ademe (French Agency for the Environment and Energy Control), regional councils, general councils or the European Parliament. Specific assistance programmes are being developed at regional level in the South of France.

Economic simulation

Let's take the example of a 4.8 kWp (peak kilowatt) photovoltaic power plant installed in the region of Toulouse by a private individual. The initial investment amounts to 38,000 € for an integrated facility and 32,000 € for a stacked facility.
The tax credit for this couple from Toulouse with one child is 8,200 €.
The overall investment is therefore 29,800 € for an integrated facility and 23,800 € for a stacked facility.
The annual production in this region is estimated at 5,500 kWh, for yearly total sunshine of 1,200 hours. The annual income for an integrated facility is estimated at 3,000 € and at 1,650 € for a stacked facility.

The period of return on investment is only 10 years for an integrated facility and 15 years for a stacked facility.

When compared with the lengths of mortgages which are longer and longer (up to 25 years in France), this period of return on investment is very short and makes photovoltaic solar energy a secure investment.
It should be noted that an increase of only 2% of the buy-out price of the energy produced, over 20 years, i.e. 0.445 €/kWh, increases the production to 2,450 € compared with 1,650 €.

The future undeniably lies in the integration of photovoltaic modules.
